I walked into the Huddle House Restaurant in Brunswick, Georgia and sat down at the table. I picked up the menu and was to order something for breakfast.

“Excuse me,” I looked up and   20   a nice-looking woman standing before me.

“Is your name Roger?”  21   asked.

“Yes, ” I answered, feeling rather surprised as I had never seen her before.

“My name’s Barbara and my husband is Tony,” she said, pointing to a middle-aged man sitting alone at the table by the window. He was  22   and weak.

“Tony White, from Landon School in Jacksonville, Florida,” she added.

I looked at that man for a few seconds but I didn’t recognize him.

“I am sorry, Roger,” Tony rolled by me in the wheelchair, being pushed by his wife, raising his thin, shaking hand. “I am so sorry for   29   that I did to you.”

Have you ever wished to have an umbrella that makes your hands free? Alan Kaufman has come up with the “Nubrella”, which means “new” + “umbrella”. It is the first truly hands-free umbrella in the world. The inventor says that it stops rain, wind and snow and can keep your head, face and hair dry.

“I never planned to invent a product. I just noticed a problem and had a new idea,” said the inventor. The idea for the invention began on one rainy day. Mr Kaufman was standing in one of his stores. He began to look at people’s umbrellas. He found that they had to try very hard to keep their umbrellas in the right place. At that moment an idea came into his mind. He ran to his desk and drew a picture. In this way, the nubrella was born.

One cool feature of the nubrella is that you don’t hold it like a normal umbrella; you wear it. The shoulder straps (肩带) of the nubrella allow people to be fully hands-free, so when walking in the rain with the nubrella, you are able to use your cell phone or drink a hot cup of coffee. Also, the nubrella will never be inverted (颠倒) in the wind. The new umbrella is far safer than traditional ones, because it has no sharp points.

A lot people like reading, why? Words play magic. They can create pictures in our mind; they’re can help us express our feelings that we have been trying to hide, and like a key, words can open up locked hearts and free our souls that have been kept deep inside.

When different people are reading the same passage, for example, about a scene(情景) which shows a palace at midnight, the words they read are the same, yet if they are asked to point out what the scene is like in their mind, each person will have the pictures drawn differently. How they draw their palace according to their nature appears to be view on how they can see things.

Although human minds are different, I do believe that somehow(以某种方法) we have all come across mutual feelings. Stories that touch(触动) us, stressed that terrify us, stories that set us free---- we all have tasted the pain, the fear, the freedom because we all have feelings. I believe all of us have personalities within personalities, and by that I mean people who seem to be strong are not always that strong, they are easily hurt on the inside.

Good writers, who can smartly use the right words in their writings, will easily break through the shell(壳) of one’s personality within. Great writers, who can use only words to move the personality within, will understand one’s weakness. Excellent writers, who can use the perfect words to aim at the personality within, will open up one’s heart---- even rewrite his or her life.

I want to be an excellent writer because when I read, I feel like home. Home is where my books are. When I feel scared, I read, and it becomes my candles. When I feel sad, I read, it becomes my cover. When I feel lonely, I read, and it becomes my company.

Home is where we leave the sadness, fear and stress behind, where we only allow happiness to stay. I want to be a writer who brings such feeling to everyone to bring them home with my words.

Reading is all that I need. Whenever I read, I just feel the magic that words create, leaving everything behind.

A. a place where we live happily         B. a place where we read freely

C. a sense of belonging                    D. a sense of relaxing

43. Which of the following statement is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Many words can help hide your feelings deep inside.

B. Some writers can free your personalities from locked hearts.

C. Most people will draw the same picture for the same passage.

D. No places will keep the sadness, fear and stress away from people.

44. The best title for the passage is ____________.

A. Creative Minds                                B. Excellent writers

六、阅读短文, 根据短文内容回答问题。(共10分,每小题2分)

The British are known for their sense of humour. However, it is often difficult for foreigners to understand their jokes. The main point to remember is that the British often use understatement.

Understatement means saying less than you think or feel. For example, if someone gets very wet in a shower of rain, he might say, ‘It’s a little damp (潮湿的) outside.’ Or, if someone is very impolite and shouts at another person, someone else might say, ‘She isn’t exactly friendly.’ Understatement is often used in unpleasant situation or to make another person look silly. Understatement plays an important part in British humour.

An other key to understanding British humour is that the British like to make fun of themselves as well as others. They often laugh about the silly and unpleasant things that happen to our everyday life when someone accidently falls over in the street. They also like to make jokes about people from different classes of society. They like to make jokes about their accents, the way they dress and the way they behave. What’s more, the British love to watch comedies (喜剧) about people who do not know how to behave in society. The comedies series Mr Bean is a good example of this kind of humor.

Mr Bean is the character created by British actor Rowan Atkinson in 1990. Mr Bean doesn’t talk often, and instead he uses his body movement and facial expressions to make people laugh. Perhaps what makes Mr Bean so funny is that he does things that adults in the real world cannot do. Mr Bean is popular in many countries round the world because you do not have to speak English to understand the humours. Because of this, manypeople have become familiar with the British sense of humours.

50. Is it difficult for foreigners to understand British jokes?

51. What does ‘understatement’ mean?
